Question by Carl S: Can tinnitus cause different sounds in each ear?
Can tinnitus manifest itself as two different sounds in both ears? My left ear has had a high pitched ringing for years, and now my right ear has a low pulsing hum. Is this normal or is it something else? I am a 23 year old seemingly healthy male.
The pulsating hum is new .. maybe 1 month old.. and does not go with my heart beat – it is much slower. I take Claritin D daily, rarely use Motrin IB for back pain and never more than 400mg in a dose. I was on a Prednisone oral 10 day schedule starting with 50mg back in January, and I had a 40mg Kenalog injection in mid-February. I have cut caffeine out of my diet, and I quit smoking entirely (never more than 1 a day previously… usually 3 a week so not heavy.)
I can’t figure this out! I have googled to no avail, and I am hesitant to go to the doctor because I am unemployed and have no insurance. When the left ear ringing began, they told me the ringing was permanent and to just live with it.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
I had a hearing test when I was 14 and the initial ringing started. They found minimal loss of hearing and said it was most likely from an ear infection and it may or may not be permanent.
Fast forward 9 years, I have taken great care with my ears. I have only been to maybe 4 or 5 indoor concerts with loud music lasting 1-2hrs each. I realized this was dumb and haven’t gone to one in about 3 years. I even avoid movie theatres because the sound is too loud for my taste.
As for the medicine, I stopped taking Claritin-D and this problem started up. I had a congested left ear for a month which wouldn’t clear and I took it daily during winter as well as Nasonex to clear that up. Could this be related?
I don’t think this would be a big problem if it was sort of the same tune. Its like the opposite sound in my right ear and extremely annoying because it pulses and is hard to cover up.

Answer by madi_sangre I play the drums and I’ve got tinnitus, but its the same ringing sound in both ears. Maybe a little bit softer in the left one bit still a high pitched ringing. I’ve done some research and apparently tinnitus can be different sounds than a high pitched ringing, but im not sure if it would be different in each ear.

Question by Jonh L: Is a sypmtom of tinnitus inlcude high frequency sounds too?
Best answer:
Answer by melissa8886 The pitch that is heard with tinnitus all depends on what the cause of the ringing is. Most of the time if the tinnitus is a side effect of medication, the tone or pitch that is heard is low and almost sounds like a swishing noise. Tinnitus can also manifest as a high pitch ringing also, with various other causes. None the less, if the tinnitus is persistent, you should see a physician.
