I had heard this thumping noise for awhile, and my doctor found a cholesteatoma, and said it may have caused this thumping noise. I was worried that I would be excited to get rid of the noise, but wake up knowing that its not the cause. So I wanted some other opinions, do you think a cholesteatoma can cause pulsatile tinnitus?

Nobody really knows what causes Tinnitus, so I doubt that anyone can make a connection to a cholesteatoma. I wish they’d find a cure though.

There are many possible underlying causes of pulsatile tinnitus. Unlike regular tinnitus, the underlying cause of pulsatile tinnitus (which is much more rare) can sometimes be identified and fixed. There is definitely a possibility. Pulsatile tinnitus is usually objective in nature, resulting from change of blood flow or increased blood turbulence in the large arteries and veins in the neck, base of the skull, or the smaller blood vessels inside the ear. General Causes are hypertension, heart murmur, glomus (globe-shaped) tumor, Eustachian tube disorder, or an abnormality of a vein or artery, atherosclerosis or venous hum, but it can also arise as a subjective phenomenon from an increased awareness of blood flow in the ear. I think it’s the start of tinnitus.
There is no cure but there is a treatment so don’t freak out.
Some advice:
A- Stay away from loud noises
B- Exercise to increase blood circulation and calm nerves (Do tai chi and yoga.)
C- Cover up the noise of tinnitus with external noise.
Be aware that only 10% of people are able to eliminate the symptoms and about 80% are able to reduce the sound.
